T-Hawks Win 2010 NPFL Championship Game
The Menomonie Thunderhawks defeated the Lake Area Screaming Eagles with a 34-32 Victory July 24th at Williams Stadium in Menomonie, WI. In what turned into an epic Saturday evening, the Thunderhawks brought home their first ever championship. After going 2-7 in 2009, the Thunderhawks finished 2010 with an overall 9-3 record after defeating the Screaming Eagles for the NPFL Championship.

The first half belonged to the Thunderhawks, going into half with a commanding 24-12 lead behind the arm and legs of Quarterback Troy Young and the strong blocking of the T-Hawk offensive line, leading the way for running back Bradlee Willetts. With 104 yards on the ground and 147 in the air, the Thunderhawks seemingly had the game in control.

Coach Roberts,”The first half we were really had things clicking, Troy was tossing the ball all over and Brad was breaking tackles left and right behind our o-line, 2nd half was obviously a different story, but hey, the end to this game made for an incredible experience for our players and the stands, I can’t say enough how much support we’ve been steadily getting from our Menomonie Community, it’s been a special year.”

The Eagles charged back in the 2nd half, getting the score to 24 to 20 on a long pass from Eagles Quarterback Jason McCloskey. The T-Hawks responded with a Young to Block touchdown in the 3rd quarter to make it 31-20. The Eagles then reeled off 2 straight touchdowns to take a 32-31 lead with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

The Thunderhawk offense then drove down to the Eagles 31 and stalled to make it 4th and 5. Coach Roberts,”It was decision time for sure. Our offense was a bit out of sync and we were having some issues moving the ball consistently in the 2nd half. I looked at where we were at and knew we had to take the field goal shot. Our kicker, Nick Nelson, has been improving all year long and we knew he could do it and get us an opportunity to win the game.” Nelson proceeded to drill the 48 yard field goal to give the Thunderhawks a 34-32 lead with just over 3 minutes to play.

The Thunderhawks defense took the field and battled with the Eagles as they made 2 first downs to get into T-Hawk territory. With a minute and 20 seconds remaining the T-Hawks made their final stand of the 2010 season, picking off the McCloskey pass by Linebacker Daniel Button, returning fresh from a month and a half off recovery from a broken hand.

Coach Roberts,”I couldn’t have imagined a better end to our season. When we started practicing as a team in January, our goal was simple, win a Championship. Well we won our championship and look forward to continue to build as an organization for 2011 and beyond in the Menomonie Community. My hat goes off to our players, coaches, and fans!”
